Valentine’s Day on Kos Island
February 14th is celebrated in many countries around the world, although it is not an official holiday. But couples enjoy taking the time to travel or to note Valentine’s Day with something special. For those who choose Kos island to mark the event, Kos city is one of the best destinations, as here are the most businesses still open offseason.
There is no commemoration of St. Valentine in the Greek Orthodox Church, so you cannot expect religious manifestations on the island of Kos on Valentine’s Day. For Catholic observers, note that there is only one Catholic chapel in Kos Town, right next to the Catholic cemetery. Holy masses are celebrated here every Saturday at 6:00 pm, and every Sunday at 11:00 am and 6:00 pm.
Only young people celebrate Valentine’s Day on Kos, influenced by Occidental commercial trends, with the usual gifts in red and pink. Some restaurants and cafes may offer special Valentine’s Day menus and Valentine’s Day-themed parties, although rarely.
Although not commercially promoted, there is a Greek Orthodox St. Valentine: Agios Yakinthos, or St. Hyacinth. His feast is celebrated on July 3. There is, however, no church dedicated to the saint on Kos, and there are no celebrations in his honor here. But you can choose July for a romantic vacation, and choose Astir Odysseus Kos Resort & Spa to spend unforgettable moments by the sea. Check out the SPA offers for something to pamper your body and soul, or the wedding packages if you choose KOS to tie the knot.
The first days of July, when the Greek Orthodox Church observes St. Hyacinth, is a great time to travel to Kos, and early bookings are highly encouraged, as this is mid-season, a favorite timeframe for many of our guests.
