Tigkaki Beach: One of the Finest on Kos
The island of Kos, while not among the most famous of Greece, it is one of the most charming you’ll ever visit. Despite the increasing number of tourists arriving here every year, the island keeps a lot of its unique, pristine charm.
Kos is famous as the cradle of Hippocrates, the father of western medicine, founder of the Hippocratic School of Medicine. But even before Hippocrates founded his school, on Kos there was the Asklepieion, a healing temple honoring the Greek god of medicine Asclepius. Hippocrates is said to have received his medical training on Kos, at the Asklepieion, and he learned medicine from the Thracian physician Herodicus of Selymbria.
The Asklepeion is one of the most popular tourist attractions on Kos, and it is only 15 minutes drive from Tigaki. You should definitely visit it if you stay at the Astir Odysseus Resort. But another reason to stay with us, is the proximity to the finest beach on the northern part of the island, Tigkaki Beach.
The beach offers about 10 km of white, fine sands, caressed by shallow crystal blue waters. It is well developed for tourists, especially around hotels and resorts, that offer free umbrellas and deck-chairs to their customers. This is where you want to be especially if you travel with small children, as the shallow waters are safe, and children can play at ease under your supervision. This Blue Flag beach offers excellent dining opportunities, due to several restaurants, taverns and bars opened especially to satisfy tourists and beach users. All the facilities you need for an excellent day at the beach are in place: showers, WC, wheelchair accessibility, lifeguards, and more. For lovers of water sports, there’s enough going, but the beach is mainly popular with windsurfers. Even if you have never attempted to take on the waves, there’s a windsurfing training center right on the beach, with affordable prices, certified instructors, and all the gear you will need.
To enjoy the full benefits of the beach, choose Astir Odysseus for your stay. Our resort offers excellent conditions for couples and honeymooners, but also loves to entertain children with activities designed to stimulate their creativity and imagination. We offer a children’s club, which boasts an outdoor playground with swings, as well as diverse activities indoors – like crafts, painting, and board games. Of course we can also entertain little swimmers at the pool, but we also offer special activities just for them at the beach.
And after you’ve had enough of the beach, there’s even more to do outdoors in the area. Stop by the horseback riding center in Tigaki, to book a horseback riding tour around Alikes, or a pony ride on the beach for your kids. The horseback riding center, called Salt Lake Stables, is located just a few meters from the beach, between Tigaki and Marmari. Alikes, the Salt Lake, also next to the Tigkaki Beach, is a unique destination as well, and you should consider it while on Kos: if you visit Tigaki off-Summer season (usually late May) you can admire specific wildlife on the lake: flamingos, ringed plovers, and other birds.
If you ever needed a reason to stay at Astir Odysseus, other than the superb amenities and facilities available for you, plus our unparalleled hospitality, the location of the resort, on this splendid Blue Flag beach is it. We are waiting for you.
